Treatment Foster Care in Richmond, VA
Children and teens across the Richmond area need safe, stable homes. Intercept Health's Treatment Foster Care team, based at our Chester office just south of the city, trains and supports Richmond-area families who want to care for children who have experienced trauma.
Treatment foster care, also called therapeutic foster care, gives these children a structured, caring home and a team of professionals behind them. You'll get specialized training, a dedicated case manager and support 24 hours a day, so you never do this alone.
Why Richmond Needs Foster Families
In June 2023, there were 190 children in foster care in the City of Richmond, 125 in Henrico County and 104 in Chesterfield County, according to Richmond Social Services figures reported by WRIC. Many are teens: statewide, about 38% of children in foster care are 13 or older. Every new foster family helps more children stay close to their schools, friends and communities.

How to Get Started

01
Fill out the qualification form
The first step is completing an inquiry or qualification form. This allows the Intercept Health team to learn more about your interest in becoming a foster parent and answer any initial questions.
Tell us a little about yourself and your interest in fostering. Our Chester team will follow up to answer your questions, usually within one to two weeks.
02
Attend an information session and meet the team
After submitting an inquiry, you will meet with members of our Treatment Foster Care team. This meeting provides an opportunity to learn more about the program and determine if fostering is the right fit for you.
Learn how treatment foster care works and what the commitment looks like, then complete your application with our Chester team.
03
Complete training and your home study
Training helps foster parents develop the knowledge and skills needed to support youth with emotional and behavioral challenges. Training topics often include trauma-informed care, behavior management strategies, and communication techniques.
Most families are certified in about 3 to 6 months, because training, the home study and paperwork can all happen at the same time.
